Wow, what happened to February? I guess time flies when you are having fun! We have sure been having fun and working hard in Grade Five this past month.
First of all, a BIG thank you to everyone who came to our Science Showcase on February 26. It was a huge success. The students shared highlights of an investigation they did earlier in the year. We heard students from different grades talk about how exciting science can be.
We are now in the midst an astronomy unit about the Sun, moon and planets. Ask any fifth grader some questions about the Sun, moon phases and planets to find out what they have learned.
Later this month, Grade Five students will be conducting water quality tests on the Chao Phraya River. They will travel on a refurbished rice barge (see picture above). This work fits in nicely with our next science topic, Environments.
In writing, the fifth graders are continuing to draft persuasive essays. So far, they have learned about and worked upon developing a position about a particular issue and built arguments to support it. Still to come over the next few weeks, are the conclusion, revision, editing and publishing.
With reading, we continue to build our understanding of historical fiction texts. Some ways we do this are:
The class is currently working with decimals. During this unit, students investigate the meaning of decimals. They develop an understanding of the relationships among fractions, percents, and decimals, by building on previous work about fractions. They use knowledge of number relationships and a variety of representations and models to compare and order decimals and to add decimals. The main focus of the unit of work is to:
