It was great to catch up with you all at Parent Teacher Conferences two weeks ago and discuss your child’s progress so far this school year. Even with Songkran and Easter a week or two away, there is still plenty of action taking place in Grade 5 classrooms.
In Writing earlier in the month, the students were able to produce an electronic non-fiction book. The books will be featured on their personal blogs and class websites. Now, the students have moved on to poetry writing. Everything from couplets to cinquains to list poems are being written, rhymed and revised. Student poetry will be showcased at Kaleidoscope Café on Wednesday, June 4 following the Grade 5 Moving On Ceremony.
With Science, Grade 5 are exploring the factors that effect different environments. They have assembled three different investigations for observation and recording – seeds in a terrarium, seeds and water tolerance, seeds and salt tolerance. After the break, Grade 5 will investigate the factors that effect goldfish and brine shrimp.
In Mathematics, the students wrapped up a review of multiplication and division with larger numbers. Since then, they have worked on a new unit about patterns and functions. Much of this latter work lays the foundation for the beginnings of algebra.
With Reading, Grade 5 have been exploring historical fiction novels. The main focus was on the characters; how they thought, felt, acted, spoke, as well as, their role as a hero, villain or bystander in the story. Grade 5 are concluding this unit of work by constructing timelines about the events in the story or by creating a ‘Hero, Villain, Bystander” poster.
In Social Studies, the students have been learning about the Age of Exploration. They have focused on different explorers and their motivations, successes and failures. The students will research information to produce a modern day television interview with one of the explorers.
Hope you have a happy & safe Songkran break.
