The Grade 5 teachers wanted to start off by thanking all of you for your generous donations and support over the last month. As a school community, we helped a local Thai school, the Philippines disaster, the RIS Gala, and cancer awareness week. You have truly made a difference to the lives of all who need it the most.
We wanted to also mention the services field trip. We were so impressed with how our classes interacted with the Kindergarten and Grade 1 classes at the local Thai school. If only could have seen how mature the Grade Fives were as well as being so gentle and caring. Well done, Grade 5! There were several students that really stood out and took the lead in getting all students interacting as well as making it fun. A special shout out to Seamus, Eaton, JJ, Caelin and Thet Mon, just to name a few.
Now to our academics, in writing we have been working on our expository essays. They are coming together nicely and should be finished next week. Everyone has written great information to back up his or her thesis statements. The next unit of writing we will be doing is a research expository essay, which will the add element of determining how to find relevant information that supports our theories.
In mathematics, we finished off adding and subtracting large numbers. The next unit is working with fractions and percents. Each class is at different stages in the unit as we are all trying a new method of instruction. We are pinpointing what exactly each student needs and then challenging them further, once they have showed mastery of all the sections that are covered in the unit.
In Social Studies, we are wrapping up our work with our assignment using Powtoons. It is on an Asian country reflecting the 5 themes of geography. Each student will be able to showcase their knowledge of using a computer software program to create a visually effective presentation that showcases the information that they have researched over the past 2 months. This animated presentation is the next step onwards from the Powerpoint program that all of the students have used in the past. Let us know what you think of the new software that we are teaching the students. Your feedback is important to us.
In science, we have started a new unit called Sun, Moon, and Stars. We have been learning about the sun, first of all, by with tracking shadows, and how the seasons are related to the movement of the planets around the sun. Building background information about the complexity of the universe is where we are at now, however we want to ask the question to all of the students "Where do I fit in, within the universe?”
We hope that you can come and join us with our Christmas celebrations on the 19th. We also wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas break, and we will see you all in the New Year.
